Marketplace profit: the number to check before you list
A practical way to estimate what an item leaves behind after marketplace fees, shipping, and the cost of the item.

The sale price is the easy number to see. It is not the number that tells you whether the listing is worth your time.
Before you list, estimate what remains after the marketplace fee, payment processing, shipping, other selling costs, and what you paid for the item. That last number is the difference between a payout and a profit.
Start with the buyer’s price
Use the amount the buyer is expected to pay for the item. If shipping is charged separately, keep the shipping you pay in its own field. This makes it easier to see which costs are fixed and which costs move with the sale.
Keep payout and profit separate
Payout answers: “What will reach me after selling costs?” Profit answers: “What did this sale actually earn?”
The basic estimate is:
Profit = sale price - marketplace fees - processing fees - shipping - other costs - item cost
That looks simple, but separating the fields makes the result easier to question. If the margin looks thin, you can see whether the problem is the fee, the shipping method, or the original buy price.
What should you include?
| Cost | Include it? | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace fee | Yes | It is usually the largest percentage cost. |
| Payment processing | Yes | Some platforms combine it with their selling fee. |
| Shipping and packing | Yes | A small shipping underestimate can erase the margin. |
| Item cost | Yes | Without it, you have payout, not profit. |
| Promotion and supplies | When relevant | Include costs that are attached to this listing. |
Treat platform presets as starting points
Fee schedules can vary by category, seller status, payment setup, and the terms in effect when you list. A preset is useful for a quick answer, but it should not pretend to be a contract.
If your rate is different, use manual fee mode in the marketplace fee calculator. Enter the current percentage and fixed charge from the platform’s seller terms.
A useful rule before you list
If the result only works when shipping is free, the item cost is ignored, or the fee is assumed to be zero, the decision is not ready yet. Change one assumption at a time and decide whether the listing still earns its place.
The goal is not a perfect forecast. It is a clear enough estimate to spend your time on the right items.
